Abortion Options
There are three main ways to abort a pregnancy. Here is a clear breakdown of the main types of abortion methods:
1. Medication Abortion (Abortion Pills)
Approved by the FDA for use up to ten weeks since the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP), a medication abortion requires accurate pregnancy dating verified by ultrasound. The abortion pill is actually two different prescription medications. The first pill is mifepristone which blocks the hormone needed to maintain pregnancy. The second pill, misoprostol, causes cramping and bleeding to empty the uterus. You can expect strong cramps, bleeding, nausea and fatigue. A medication abortion is usually completed at home over one to two days.
If you change your mind before taking the second pill, it is possible to stop a medication abortion with the Abortion Pill Reversal protocol.

2. Surgical Abortion: Suction Aspiration / Vacuum Aspiration Abortion
Used up to about 13 weeks, a suction aspiration / vacuum aspiration abortion involves a medical provider using suction to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. It is done in a clinic. Local anesthesia is often used, sometimes sedation. Mild cramping and bleeding are common for a few days.

3. Surgical Abortion: Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)
Used for abortions between 13 and 24 weeks, a dilation and evacuation (D&E) abortion involves a medical provider dilating the cervix and using suction and instruments to remove the baby. This is done with sedation and/or anesthesia. Mild cramping and bleeding are common for a few days.

As with all medical procedures, there is significant information to understand about medical and surgical abortions. You should familiarize yourself with abortion procedures as well as potential risks and side effects so you can make an informed decision for yourself.
Even if you think you know your decision regarding abortion, verifying you have a viable pregnancy is necessary when making an abortion plan. Ultrasound is the best way to confirm your pregnancy is in your uterus and that it is developing normally. If your pregnancy is not viable you will need to seek alternative medical treatment.
