When she found out she was pregnant, Mari was really excited. But her family was not. “They wanted me to have an abortion,” she says. “They practically disowned me.”

At first, she felt she had nowhere to turn. Without support from family and friends, she felt very alone. She dove into her work but came to a point where she had to reach out to someone.

“I couldn't find a doctor so I contacted AWPC and they helped me find a doctor. They helped me with everything!”

Mari was able to have her first ultrasound at AWPC. “It was wonderful to see my baby. The people at AWPC were like my own family, holding my hand, congratulating me. It really was amazing.”

AWPC was able to connect her with a doula, a childbirth support professional that assisted her during labor.

She says that the birth of her son has changed her life for the better.

And she credits AWPC’s programs with providing the friends and support she really needed. “We are all here for each other. We need each other, as mothers, we have stories to share, tips and ideas to give and it's wonderful.”

AWPC offers in-person and on-line connection opportunities with mentors and peers. They also organize regular mom outings, family events and field trips. If you are expecting a baby or parenting a baby less than one year old, you meet with the same client advocate each month, to learn, set goals and choose supplies for you and your baby.
