Coercion To Abort
What if your partner threatens to leave or harm you unless you have an abortion?
This is an incredibly stressful and dangerous situation. It’s important that you are safe, and feel supported and heard while making a decision that affects your life in such a deep way.
THIS current Michigan statute makes it illegal to coerce a woman to have an abortion.
No one should pressure or threaten you into making a decision about your pregnancy. You have the right to decide what happens because it's your life, your future, and your well-being on the line.
A threat isn't love. If your partner is trying to control you through ultimatums or threats, that’s not healthy or respectful behavior. Healthy relationships are built on mutual respect and support. Ask yourself: If he leaves over this, is that the kind of support system I want around me and my child?
Ask yourself:
Does my partner put me down and make me feel bad about myself?
Has my partner caused harm or pain to my body?
Does my partner threaten me, the baby, other children or himself?
Does my partner blame me for his actions? Does he tell me it's my own fault he hit me?
Is my partner becoming more violent as time goes on?
Has my partner promised never to hurt me again, but still does?
You are not alone! Help is available. Whether it’s friends, family, a counselor, or a support group — having people who genuinely care and want to support you, not manipulate you — is so important.
A therapist or counselor can help you sort through your thoughts, feelings, and options without pressure. If you're dealing with manipulation, they can also help you create safe boundaries.
There are confidential helplines and counseling services that specialize in pregnancy decisions and emotional support.
Help is available if you are being threatened or intimidated; are being physically, emotionally, or sexually harmed; or feel afraid for any reason.
