Pregnant By Rape: Life Is Never A Mistake
Some people would say Ryan Bomberger should have never been born.
He was conceived through rape—a circumstance many believe justifies ending a pregnancy. Yet Ryan's birth mother made a courageous decision. She chose life and placed him for adoption. (If you have experienced rape or sexual assault, or you're in a controlling or abusive relationship, confidential help is available 24/7. That choice changed everything.
Ryan was welcomed into a loving family of fifteen children, ten of whom were adopted. Instead of being defined by the violence surrounding his conception, he was defined by the loving choice of his birth mother and adoptive parents. Today, Ryan is an Emmy Award-winning creative professional, author, speaker, husband, father of four, and cofounder of The Radiance Foundation. Two of his own children joined his family through adoption, continuing the legacy of choosing life and love.
Ryan often says that our culture wrongly assumes that "unplanned" means "unwanted" and "unwanted" means "unloved." His life tells a different story.
His autobiographical book and documentary film, Should Have Been Aborted, share the powerful journey of a child whose life many considered disposable but who has gone on to encourage countless people to see the value of every human life. Rather than allowing tragedy to have the final word, Ryan's story demonstrates that hope, purpose, and healing can grow from the hardest circumstances.
“Ryan is a creative genius. My hope is that as people encounter Ryan’s story, they will see beyond society’s empty slogans and propaganda. They will see destiny. They will see legacy. And they will understand that life—every life—is precious and worth defending. Ryan is living proof of that.”
His wife, Bethany, understands unexpected pregnancy from personal experience. After leaving a toxic relationship in her late twenties, she discovered she was pregnant. She chose life, and that decision reshaped her future in ways she never imagined. When Ryan and Bethany later married, he joyfully became an instant father to her one-year-old daughter. Years later, he officially adopted her, and together they also adopted their youngest son.
Today, Ryan and Bethany have dedicated their lives to supporting vulnerable children and encouraging families to embrace adoption. Through their ministry, they remind others that every child deserves to be seen as valuable—not because of how they were conceived, but because every life has inherent worth.
If you're facing an unexpected pregnancy, your circumstances do not determine your child's future. You may not know what tomorrow holds, but stories like Ryan's remind us that one courageous decision can impact generations.
No one can predict the life a child will live. But every child deserves the opportunity to live it.
