Frequently
Asked
Questions

Am I really pregnant?

AWPC provides free lab-quality urine pregnancy tests done in a medical setting that—according to the manufacturer—are up to 99% accurate. Up to 25% of pregnancies end in natural miscarriage.

How far along am I?

The only sure way to know how far along you are (gestational age) is to have an ultrasound and measure your pregnancy. Ultrasound is the only way to accurately confirm pregnancy dating.

Is an ultrasound important?

An ultrasound is the only way to confirm the location of the pregnancy. An ultrasound will show if the pregnancy is in the uterus (if not, then ectopic) and if the baby is alive (viable). Twenty-five percent of pregnancies end in natural miscarriage.

What are my options?

Abortion options like the abortion pill (medication abortion) and in-clinic abortion (procedural) vary depending on how far along you are. Adoption options include closed, open and semi-open adoption. Parenting mentorship and support is available with free classes and maternity and baby supplies. We offer free, confidential options counseling— a neutral space to ask medical staff questions and speak candidly about your pregnancy decisions. AWPC provides information on abortion procedures and risks, but we do not perform or provide referrals for abortion.

How early can I take the abortion pill?

There is great risk in taking abortion medications without knowing the age (gestational date) and location (uterus?) of the pregnancy. An ultrasound will show if you are having a miscarriage, in which case you would not need to make any decisions or pay for medications.

What is a self-managed abortion, at-home abortion, or Plan C?

Medication abortions stop a baby from growing, eventually ending the pregnancy and expelling the baby from your uterus. Self-managed or at-home abortion is taking abortion medications without a medical provider present to help if there are concerns or complications that arise.

How much does it cost and and will anyone find out?

All services at AWPC are completely free and confidential. No medical insurance is required, and no cash or monetary amount will be requested. If you are under the age of 18, you can receive our services without parental attendance or consent, per Michigan law. You are welcome to bring your parent/guardian or another support person with you.

If I had a negative test at home, could I still be pregnant?

Yes, false negative pregnancy tests are very possible if you take a urine test too early. We provide lab-quality urine pregnancy tests in a medical setting that are 99% accurate if you are 7-10 days from the date of conception or 1 day following your missed period.

Does AWPC offer free, continuous prenatal care?

AWPC does not offer ongoing prenatal medical services to clients beyond a lab-quality pregnancy test, limited obstetric ultrasound to confirm viability and gestational age, and options counseling. AWPC can offer referrals for ongoing prenatal care, including providers that offer services for free and at sliding scales or discounted rates. AWPC can also provide a prescription for prenatal vitamins.

When can I get an ultrasound?

You can receive a limited obstetric ultrasound as early as 5 weeks and 6 days from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). If you have questions about your period dating, or would like to make an appointment, please call, text or message us HERE.

Who can I bring with me?

You are welcome to bring a support person to your appointment. If you need to bring children to the appointment with you, please inform our office staff when scheduling your appointment, which will last no longer than one hour.

Will I be treated by a medical professional?

Yes. AWPC medical services are performed by licensed professional medical staff and medical services are overseen by an obstetrician.

How do I know if the baby is alive or if I am having a miscarriage?

The only way to confirm if the baby is alive (viable) is to have an ultrasound. We offer free, limited obstetric ultrasound in a private setting with medical professionals. We also offer pregnancy loss support for miscarriage, stillbirth, and early infant death. Call or text (248) 471-5858.
